Economical Design of Intze Type Elevated Service Reservoirs

The elevated service reservoirs form an essential part of the water supply schemes in the various part of the country. Intze type
of water tank has a logical shape leading to economical design. In this paper, designs of Intze tank for a given capacity are
presented for three ratios of height to diameter, viz. H = 1/3 D, H = 2/3 D and H = D. The design of tank with staging and
the pile foundation is presented here briefly. Cost of construction as well as operating cost for pumping water into the tank are
worked out and presented. It is observed that considering the cost of construction together with operating cost, the shallower
tank with H=1/3D is most economical among the three cases considered.
