This World Bank-funded initiative aimed to enhance the water supply to Mumbai by 100 million gallons per day (450 million litres per day) through a multi-stage process sourced from the Ulhas River at Bhatsai Dam, located 65 km from Mumbai. The treated water at Bhandup (Mumbai) was then distributed throughout the city via a network of reservoirs and transmission mains.
During the initial phase, M/s Binnie & Partners (B&P) served as the primary consultants to the Mumbai City Garbage Board (MCGB), with TCE acting as a subconsultant responsible for detailed engineering and site supervision services. In the subsequent stage, the roles were reversed, with TCE assuming the role of the Prime Consultant and B&P acting as the sub-consultant. This pattern persisted into the third stage of the project.
The Bombay Water Supply Project Stage III encountered various changes and unforeseen challenges, yet it significantly improved the availability and quality of drinking water in Mumbai.
The success of the Bombay Water Supply Project solidified TCE’s standing as the foremost consultant in India’s water supply sector. This achievement attracted the attention of civic administrations in other metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. These cities sought TCE’s expertise for the planning and execution of their significant water supply projects, further establishing TCE as a trusted authority in the field.
The commendable performance of TCE also garnered recognition from the World Bank, leading to the engagement of TCE in preparing the project report for the Hyderabad Water Supply project. Subsequently, the World Bank decided to fund the project, underscoring TCE’s credibility and expertise in the eyes of this international financial institution.
