Location
United Kingdom
A leading steel manufacturer in the United Kingdom sought to transition from a conventional, carbon-intensive Blast Furnace – Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking route to a more sustainable model. With heavy-end facilities nearing the end of their operational life, the client faced significant challenges in maintaining efficiency and reducing emissions.
The project aimed to lower Scope 1 emissions by installing an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), promoting circularity through increased use of scrap in the EAF charge. This transition not only reduced operational costs but also played a key role in enhancing steel security in the UK. It marked a significant step towards decarbonising the local steel industry, targeting a substantial reduction in direct emissions over the next decade.
TCE’s Role
Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) has been engaged from the initial stages of the project, delivering critical engineering and consultancy services, including:
- Assessment reports to evaluate plant readiness and transformation feasibility
- Capital expenditure (Capex) estimation to guide investment decisions
- Basic engineering and Bill of Quantities (BOQ) development for project execution
- Layout design and 3D modelling of the BOS plant to support planning and integration
- Master planning for future installations and evaluation of alternative EAF locations
TCE’s strategic input has been instrumental in shaping the project's implementation roadmap, ensuring a smooth transition towards sustainable steelmaking.
