One of TCE’s early overseas triumphs was the Pasir Gudang Thermal Power Station in Malaysia, a project secured amidst fierce international competition. Until then, no Indian consultant had successfully entered the Malaysian power field, dominated by British consultants due to their longstanding historical ties with Britain. TCE broke this pattern by winning the bid for the Pasir Gudang Power Station contract from the National Electricity Board of Malaysia (NEB).

The venture entailed the establishment of 2 x 110 MW oilfired units at Pasir Gudang near Johore Bahru in the Johore State, with partial financing from the World Bank. The project’s equipment was sourced from Japan, India, and other countries. TCE’s responsibilities encompassed detailed engineering, procurement, and construction supervision. The National Electricity Board of Malaysia commended TCE for its significant contribution to the project’s timely completion. This achievement marked a pivotal moment as TCE successfully challenged the British consultants’ monopoly, establishing its competence and reliability on the international stage.

The Pasir Gudang project stands as a triumphant chapter in the annals of Indian consultancy, representing a historic milestone. It marked the first instance of an Indian consultant securing a substantial contract in the Malaysian power sector, overcoming intense global competition. This victory was particularly significant as the client, with a preference for British consultants, traditionally leaned towards them due to historical ties. Following the contract win, TCE not only executed the project successfully but also met the client’s expectations, showcasing the competence and reliability of Indian consultants on the international stage.
