Tata Electric Company’s (Tata Power of today) Trombay Thermal Power Station, inaugurated in 1956, holds a special place in the history of Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE). More than just a power facility, it served as the cradle for the inception and growth of this consulting organisation.

In the 1960s, the successful commissioning of coal-fired Units 3 (62.5 MW) and 4 (150 MW) were key milestones in the station’s expansion. TCE, acting as the Architect’s Engineer, played a crucial role in their development.

The 150 MW Trombay Unit 4, the largest thermal power unit in India at the time, featured a compact layout, high steam parameters, multi-fuel firing capabilities, and the nation’s first electrostatic precipitator. TCE introduced several pioneering technologies and innovative design concepts, significantly enhancing the power generation capabilities of these plants.

The success of the Trombay Thermal Power Station opened new opportunities for TCE, allowing it to offer consultancy services nationwide.
